Harnessing AI Tools For Fraud and ABC Detection and Compliance Monitoring

The forum looked at AI tools in combatting Fraud and ABC, with focus on Detection and Compliance Monitoring.

Article

Dr Graham Bright, Head - Compliance & Operations was invited to be a panellist at The Anti-Bribery & Corruption Forum - 3rd Annual Forum, taking place on 21 April 2026. https://thoughtleaders4.com/tl4-disputes/event/the-anti-bribery-corruption-forum-2026 The forum looked at AI tools in combatting Fraud and ABC, with focus on Detection and Compliance Monitoring. On a panel moderated by JP Morgan, with an industry expert and vendor panellist, messages were discussed on the themes of ensuring safety, skills and ethical AI deployment including: safety/security/robustness,  appropriate transparency,  fairness, accountability/governance,  and contestability/redress. What do we know Traditional fraud rules are outdated quickly and where machine‑learning models continuously learn from new data (hopefully not tainted by misinformation and poor input), systems can detect novel fraud techniques without waiting for manual updates, albeit still with final human intervention. AI significantly elevates the speed, accuracy, and consistency of fraud prevention efforts. Instead of relying solely on rule‑based systems or manual reviews, introduces adaptive intelligence that evolves with emerging risks. Automated Pattern Detection   AI models can analyse vast volumes of transactional and behavioural data to identify anomalies that humans might miss. This includes subtle deviations in employee activity, access patterns, or financial transactions. Continuous Monitoring & Alerts   AI enables 24/7 monitoring of internal systems. When suspicious activity is detected—such as unusual login behaviour or irregular financial entries - the system triggers alerts in real time. Risk Prioritization   Not all alerts are equal. AI helps triage cases by assigning risk scores, allowing fraud teams to focus on the most critical issues first. This reduces noise and improves operational efficiency. System Integration   AI tools can plug into existing fraud management platforms, enhancing them rather than replacing them. This ensures a smoother adoption curve and maximizes the value of current infrastructure. In summary Also discussed was the future of job security in an AI-enabled world: what next for the human compliance officer? Human compliance officers are not disappearing - in fact, their roles are becoming more strategic, judgment driven, and essential as AI reshapes the regulatory landscape. Humans will own oversight, ethics, interpretation, judgement and accountability, which regulators continue to require.   Today even the most advanced AI cannot replace: Human judgment - Regulators expect explainability, accountability, and ethical reasoning - areas where humans outperform machines. Interpretation of complex, evolving regulations - AI can summarize rules, but it cannot reliably interpret ambiguous legal standards or apply them contextually across jurisdictions. Ethical oversight & governance - AI can detect anomalies, but it cannot decide what is right, fair, or proportionate. Relationship based compliance - Regulators, auditors, and internal stakeholders require human interaction, negotiation, and trust. The New Skill Set for the AI Era Compliance Officer To stay future proof, compliance professionals are increasingly expected to develop: AI literacy & model oversight - Understanding how AI systems work, fail, drift, and bias. Data governance expertise - Ensuring data quality, lineage, privacy, and auditability. Regulatory technology (RegTech) fluency. Working with automated monitoring, workflow, and reporting tools. Cross disciplinary thinking - Blending legal, technical, ethical, and operational perspectives. What Compliance Officers Will Do That AI Cannot Scenario based risk assessment AI can detect anomalies, but humans must decide what they mean. Here’s the emerging division of labour: What’s Next for the Human Compliance Officer? Job security in the AI era depends on resilience, upskilling, and policy adaptation, not resistance. The profession is shifting from compliance operator to compliance strategist, where AI will elevate the role, not eliminate it & will see increased value and influence. Those who do not adapt face career disruption.  The Future Becoming AI Governance Leaders - Compliance teams will own AI risk frameworks, model oversight, and ethical guardrails. Moving into Strategic Advisory Role - Compliance will influence product design, business strategy, and cross border expansion. Acting as Human in the Loop Decision Maker - Regulators increasingly require human oversight for high risk AI decisions. Leading Investigations & Incident Response - AI can flag anomalies, but humans must investigate, interpret, and remediate. Shaping the Future of Regulation - Compliance officers will help define how AI should be governed globally. Final Takeaway AI will automate tasks, not eliminate the compliance profession. The future belongs to compliance officers who can combine legal expertise, ethical reasoning, and AI enabled insight to guide organizations through increasingly complex regulatory environments.
